He was encouraged to take up the sport by his mother. "Once I learnt how to swim, my mother took me to the waves. I was two at the time and when I was four I was given my first surfboard." FROM HAWAII TO COSTA RICA
He was born on Maui island, HI, United States of America, to German parents who are surfing enthusiasts. His mother comes from Kassel in Germany, where Glatzer has visited many times to see his grandparents. At age two he and his family relocated to Pavones, Costa Rica, where he grew up. "In 1999 we did a vacation in Costa Rica and we liked it so much that we stayed. "Growing up in Pavones is amazing. It's a little town in Costa Rica with some of the biggest waves in the world. It has a tropical weather and almost no tourists. Here, I have the best training ground all year round. And also in my birthplace, Hawaii, where the locals have accepted me and consider me as a member of their culture and family. What more can I ask for?"
