Her uncle Gregg Nakamura has represented Hawaii in the Qualifying Series of the World Surf League. (worldsurfleague.com, 2019)

She began surfing in Costa Rica and stood up on her first wave at age three. She started competing around age nine in Hawaii, United States of America. (worldsurfleague.com, 10 Feb 2019; howlermag.com, 30 Apr 2019; tokyo2020.org, 07 Jul 2020)

Her parents ran a surf school in Costa Rica. "My parents owned a surf school and I grew up in the water there. I practically was born in the ocean. My uncle was a professional surfer, and so that's kind of how I jumped into it. Then I realised that I have competitiveness in my blood. I think it maybe just came from living in survival mode in the jungle [in Costa Rica]. But I love to compete and it's one of my joys, for sure." COSTA RICA TO HAWAII TO FIJI
She was born in Costa Rica to parents from the United States of America. Her parents are both surfing instructors who met in Hawaii. "We lived completely off the grid, completely in the jungle [in Costa Rica]. There were monkeys in our backyard and every type of animal you can think of. We lived right on the beach and it really shaped who I am. My parents run a surf school and surfing just runs in my blood." After spending her early years in Costa Rica, she moved to Oahu, HI, United States of America, with her parents at age eight. After nearly a decade there the family moved to Fiji. "My family and I call each other the homeless nomads. We pretty much don't really have a home. We live out of our suitcase. But if I am with my family, I feel like I am at home." She considered representing Hawaii instead of Costa Rica on the World Tour, but decided against it when they left Hawaii. "We moved away, so it kind of didn't make sense to represent Hawaii anymore. Our family has kind of lived in a style where we've always taken chances. My dad's biggest motto is, 'You can sleep when you're dead'. We've always lived an adventure, and now I'm even more excited to travel and explore a bunch of new places." COOKING
She is passionate about cooking and during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic she launched a YouTube channel with her own recipes and took a nutrition course while she was locked down in Namotu Island in Fiji, where her father manages a local resort. "Cooking and learning about what food works for my body is something I'm super passionate about. I'm obsessed with cooking. If I'm not in the water, I'm in the kitchen 24/7. It's actually hilarious. If you ever lose me, I'm either in the water or in the kitchen." She is also passionate about the environment. "Protecting the ocean, being kind with Mother Nature, and taking the role of an environmentalist is super important to me. It is definitely one of my biggest goals to use my platform to do that. We only have one earth and one ocean, and we need to do everything we can to protect it." (tokyo2020.org, 07 Jul 2020; surfline.com, 31 Mar 2020; YouTube channel, 28 Oct 2020)
