SHARING A DREAM
In 2019 he and his brother Bassa secured the two France men's qualifying quotas for the 2020 Olympic Games. "It was our objective since we knew sports climbing would be at the Olympics. Since the day we knew it, we made our sponsoring file and at the front of it we put an image of both of us with the text 'Tokyo 2020.' We were there since day one. This is our personal victory, having said it previously and having done it. It's one of a kind, the Olympic Games, and we are siblings. That will be quite an experience. We are prepared for that." CLIMBING BROTHERS
He and his brother Bassa have supported each other since beginning their sporting careers. The pair, who refer to themselves as 'Les Freres Mawem', have developed their own brand of t-shirts and climbing accessories and aim to open a number of climbing halls in the future. Although they live over 10,000 miles away from each other, they keep in constant contact. Bassa said: "We call each other almost everyday to know how training goes. For me, knowing that Mickael gives everything in training, it encourages me to do the same. When I train I always say to myself that I need to continue on, so I can call him and tell him that I am exhausted. When I call him I only expect one thing, that he tells me the same thing. In our goals we need to say, 'Okay, next time I see him he needs to see how much I improved, he needs to see the difference'. Distance pushes us to expand our limits."
