In January 2018 he was initially handed a six-month suspension for testing positive for the banned substance tetrahydrocannabinol, the main active ingredient in cannabis, in a urine sample collected in-competition at the Oi Park Jam in Brava Beach, Brazil. He completed a USADA anti-doping educational tutorial and had his period of ineligibility reduced by three months, meaning it expired on 28 April 2018.
