His older brother Eiju Hirano has competed in snowboard at international level, including at the 2010 and 2011 junior world championships. His younger brother Kaishu Hirano is a professional snowboarder who won silver in halfpipe at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland. He was influenced by his older brother. Their father Hidenori aspired to become a professional surfer and has run a skate park in Murakami, Niigata Prefecture. "Ever since I was little, my father built an environment for me to get involved in both snowboard and skateboard, so they have always been very interlinked for me. OLYMPIC SNOWBOARDING AND SKATING
He decided to focus on skateboarding after winning his second Olympic medal in snowboarding at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. "I took up skateboarding at the same time I began snowboarding. I was attracted to take on a new challenge by the news that it was included on the programme for the 2020 Olympics. This challenge will also be for my personal growth. Actually, the two sports look very similar in appearance, but they are totally different. So I never assumed that I would be good at skateboarding just because I can do snowboarding. For example, it is like a baseball player who tries to get involved in basketball. I know that I have to start from scratch and need to think about how to reach the top. As I have participated at two editions of the Olympic Winter Games, no one understands how tough it is to compete there more than I do.
