He began shooting three years after joining the Indian Navy. He had signed up at age 18. (timesofindia.indiatimes.com, 03 Feb 2016; tribuneindia.com, 05 Apr 2006)

He took up the sport through the Indian Navy. "At that time, I didn't have any special affinity for shooting. But it was part of our routine to shoot 7.62mm fullbore ammunition, and at the age of 18, it was something. There are no shooting ranges on ships, so we fixed a target on the quarterdeck with long sticks and hooks and took aim. The ship lurched, the target swayed and standing on the unstable deck with those heavy assault rifles, we took aim. That experience aroused my interest in shooting. I liked that feeling." RIO MISS
Despite securing a quota place for India ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games, he was not selected for the team that went to Rio de Janeiro. "I was so heartbroken, dejected and didn't know what to do. My dreams all came crashing down in that moment because even until the last day before the Olympic contingent left India, I was hoping against hope that I would get a call and take part in the Games. But it was not to be." (tokyo2020.org, 06 Oct 2020)

PREVIOUS OCCUPATION
He joined the Indian Navy at age 18 and left the service in 2014. "I belong to a very poor family, so the sooner I got a job, the better; that was foremost on my mind. I was going to take admission in graduation and pursue a bachelor's degree, but a fixed source of income was more important for me." (hindustantimes.com, 30 Aug 2019; news18.com, 03 Feb 2016)
