MOTHERHOOD
In 2020 she was appointed as a director of the Mama Athletes Network [MAN], a Japanese group that helps female athletes return to competition after they have given birth. She took time away from the sport after she gave birth to her daughter Mei in 2001, and returned two years later. "At that time, it wasn't common for female athletes who gave birth to continue their sporting career in Japan. But as a single mother, I had to become a 'mama athlete' and prepare for the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games so I could earn an income."
