She used to practise gymnastics from age three to 16. After sustaining an injury she switched to shooting. "I always had the dream of going to the Olympics as a gymnast, but a spinal injury left me out of the London 2012 Olympic Games qualifier and out of my sport. That is when my doctor recommended shooting because it had less impact on my spine. Also a friend of my brother's, who practises shooting, invited me to try the sport and that's how I started." In 2019 she focused on the psychological aspect of shooting. "This sport is 75-80% mental. You have to know how to deal with anxiety, nerves and stress during competitions and that's why my psychologist Jorge Lopez and I have worked and focused on that aspect this past year [2019]." "'Happiness is the journey, not the destination'. I like this phrase because it represents me in the sense that for a long time I struggled to achieve my goal [in gymnastics] and I thought I would be happy to achieve it and then life put a stop to it with my spinal injury. Over time, and after I obtained my Olympic quota in another sport, I realised that life takes you in totally unknown directions and you just have to trust, live, and enjoy the present." She was inspired to compete at the Olympic Games in artistic gymnastics after watching the 2004 Games in Athens on television. She went on to represent Guatemala in the sport, including at the 2010 Pan American Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico, and was hoping to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games. However, a spinal injury forced her to retire from the sport in 2011. She began shooting the following year. "Gymnastics was my life.
