He first went sailing at just two days old with his grandfather around Sydney Harbour, to see the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race in Australia. But it wasn't until he was age 10 and his family moved to a house on the edge of Lake Macquarie, a few hours north of Sydney, that he began sailing himself. He started racing at age 13, and progressed through a range of junior classes. After a chance meeting with coach Victor Kovalenko, he began focusing on the 470 class in 2009. GOING FOR GOLD
He began sailing with Mathew Belcher in 2012. Belcher had just won gold in the 470 class at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, but was looking for a new sailing partner following the retirement of his former crewmate Malcolm Page. The new partnership achieved immediate success, winning every event they entered in 2012 and 2013. In 2014 their accomplishments continued, finishing on the podium at every international regatta they competed in. Although the pair had to settle for silver in the 470 class at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, they decided to commit to another Olympic cycle together and go for gold at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. "It's a unique partnership with Mat and our coach Victor Kovalenko. We've had so much time to learn about each other. The motivation and determination from coming second at Rio, and this time being hungry for that top spot, to share the journey with people you're close to and have worked so closely with is really special."
