His wife Friederike has represented Germany in the 470 class in sailing, and competed at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. His brother Daniel has also represented Australia in sailing, and competed together with Mathew in the 470 class at the 2003 World Championships in Cadiz, Spain. He began sailing at age six in Gold Coast, QLD, Australia, and started racing at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. He raced in a Sabot up until age 15, before moving onto 420s, and finally started racing the 470 class just after the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London their boat was called 'Practical Magic', while at the world championships in 2014 it was called 'Happy Feet'.
