"I'm incredibly thankful I am to be able to pursue this dream. Even though Laser Radial is a single-handed sport, everything about it requires teamwork. I'm a firm believer in everything being more fun if there's an element of impossibility about it." (laserinternational.org, 16 Oct 2019)

SAILING GENES
Born into a sailing family, her parents Andrew and Carolyn had been circumnavigating the world on an Adams 13 catamaran boat for 17 years before Mara was born in 1999. At age four months her mother brought her from Australia, where she was born, to rejoin Andrew on the yacht based in the Canary Islands, Spain. "Having enjoyed such a sailing-oriented upbringing, the decision to pursue professional sailing after I finished school seemed fairly logical. After returning to Australia for the Multihull Nationals, which we won [2014], I decided I wanted my own boat so started sailing the Laser Standard, because I didn't know any better, and didn't like to lose, before stepping down to the Laser Radial as I was still only 55kg."
