She began sailing at age nine with her brother Evan in Manly, NSW, Australia. The pair's first sailing experience was traumatic. "It was a 20-knot wind, we launched off the boat ramp and capsized in front of the ferry terminal. The ferry was coming towards us, and we had to get towed out. It was a horrible experience and I hated sailing for a long time." (wdsailing.com.au, 05 Dec 2015; Australian Sailing Team, 14 Oct 2014)
