CHANGING CLASS
After failing to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in the Laser class, he switched to the Finn class in late 2016. As Laser boats weigh 57 kilogrammes and Finn boats weigh 16, he had to gain weight in order to be able to effectively control and steer the boat. He gained 15 kilogrammes through eating and building muscle. "I spent a lot of time in the gym, especially in the first year, to increase muscle mass. And to create muscle mass, you have to eat more than you need, especially a lot of proteins and carbohydrates. Five or six times a day, 30 grams of protein go in. Basically, you just have three meals a day, like everyone else does. However, the intermediate snacks are somewhat larger than those of the average Dutch person." (teamnl.org, 14 Dec 2019)
