His brother Mads Emil Stephensen represented Denmark in the 49er class at the 2018 World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. His partner Jaime Ryan represented Australia in the 470 class at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In February 2018 he sustained a severe cut to his left leg during a training camp in New Zealand. He fell into the water and the rudder struck his left leg after his trapezoid hook broke at high speed. Doctors told him he was fortunate that the injury had not affected any of his nerves, but he still required surgery. He was able to resume competing in July 2018.
