His father Torben Grael represented Brazil in sailing at six consecutive editions of the Olympic Games between 1984 and 2004, winning gold in the Star class in 1996 and 2004. His sister Martine has also competed in the sport, winning gold in the 49er FX class at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. His uncle Lars was an international sailor, and claimed bronze in the Tornado class at the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1996. He took up the sport at age six, and began sailing competitively at age 11. (sailing.org, 01 Nov 2019)

Sailing is a popular sport in his family, and his father Torben competed in the sport at international level. "I used to watch my father's competitions, and my first memory of sailing is with my mother. She taught me how to sail. She took me in her boat while my father was competing." General Interest

General
CREWMATE
He competes in the 49er class with Gabriel Borges. The pair initially began sailing together in December 2012, but went their separate ways after finishing 11th at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro due to the pressure and strain of spending so much time preparing for the event. By the end of 2018 they had resumed their partnership, working alongside a psychologist to help them to communicate better with each other. "For a year-and-a-half we stopped sailing together. That was very important for the development for our relationship on the water. He is an incredible guy and extremely competent." (extra.globo.com, 19 Aug 2019; odia.ig.com.br, 09 Jul 2016)

FAMILY
His father Torben and his sister Martine have both won gold medals in sailing at the Olympic Games, while his uncle Lars claimed bronze at the Games in 1988 and 1996. "Our family always wants the best for me. If you like something that much, you go until the end, and it doesn't matter what people think. Obviously I hear advice, either from Martine or from my father. Sometimes they give me advice that, due to family relationships, is quite difficult to hear. But they are good professionals and I have to consider that and think that they want the best for me, always." (globoesporte.globo.com, 10 Aug 2019; folha.uol.com.br, 19 Aug 2016)
