He began sailing at age 10 after his parents enrolled him in a programme at Beverly Yacht Club in Marion, MA, United States of America. "I started sailing in Optimist when I was 11, and sailed each summer from then on. Before college sailing, I sailed Laser Radials mostly, but dabbled in 420s in the Cape Cod youth circuit." (terrytopsider.com, 19 Dec 2011; 470.org, 28 Feb 2011)
:
He has loved racing sailboats since his first competition. "My first race was at the Beverly Yacht Club Junior Regatta. I was sailing an Optimist at the time. It was pretty windy, so this regatta was three days of 15 to 18 knots. It got me hooked." (awt.terrytopsider.com, 19 Dec 2011)

PARTNERSHIP
He competed at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games with Graham Biehl. In 2013 he began sailing with David Hughes. "Neither of us were necessarily thinking about continuing as Olympic sailors [after 2012], but the idea of joining forces evolved. We felt we could form a partnership that would succeed in winning an Olympic medal and was worth our time, resources, and personal investment." (SportsDeskOnline, 09 Jan 2020; ussailing.org, 01 Jan 2019; premiere-racing.com, 19 Jan 2015)

OLYMPIC AMBITIONS INFLUENCE COLLEGE CHOICE
He chose to study at Yale University in the United States of America because of its Olympic sailing tradition. "I knew that I wanted to sail in college almost as soon as I was aware of sailing as an Olympic sport. Yale is one of the strongest academically so it was at the top of my list. I grew up in Boston, so did not want to go to college in my backyard, but wanted to go to college in NEISA [New England Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association] or MAISA [Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association]. I looked at Brown, Dartmouth, Georgetown, and Yale. Of those schools Yale had the best Olympic tradition, and, even though the team was in a bit of slump, I felt that it would help my sailing more than the others, and I would be able to sail varsity right away at Yale."
