She began sailing at age six while growing up in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. (perfectvisionsailing.com, 30 Mar 2021; quantumsails.com, 30 June 2016)

"My brother was sailing before me, so I started so I could try to beat him and the rest of the boys. At first it was hard because my girlfriends eventually started to quit. At a point when I had to decide what to do, the parents hired coach Agustin Resano from Argentina. He started a programme with us, and from the moment I learned how to compete, I spent long hours on the water. It was hard work, but I loved learning about the boat, how to make it go faster, how the wind works in St. Thomas. I just loved learning more about the sport." "When I'm on the water I think back to my coast guard training: the quick thinking, attention to detail, ability to make mistakes and learn quickly from them, and the work ethic to do whatever it takes to get the job done. At the end of the day, most important is the relationships in the boat." (uscgasports.com, 22 Jul 2019)
