OLYMPIC SELECTION TIEBREAK
Their selection for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo came as the result of a tiebreak with US 49erFX crew Anna Tobias and Paris Henken. The team with the lowest overall placement score from the 2019 and 2020 world championships would gain selection by US Sailing for Tokyo, but both teams had 16 points after Shea and Roble finished 13th [2019] and third [2020] while Tobias and Henken finished ninth [2019] and seventh [2020]. As a result, the tiebreaker was decided by the best result from the world championships in 2020, which was Shea and Roble's third-place finish. The pair began sailing together in 2016. "I grew up sailing with and against her. Stephanie and I have had a very dynamic relationship. We've been absolute rivals but we've been able to dissociate competition from friendship. We've lived together, worked together and competed against each other fiercely. She's one of my best friends. We have dedicated pretty much every aspect of our lives to this [2020 Olympic] campaign. We put everything into this physically that we have. As a team we've gained maybe 20 pounds to be at an ideal weight limit, that's a lot of eating, strength training and a lot of discipline with that. We've put a lot of energy into making decisions every day and really strive to leave no stone unturned." (teamusa.org, 14 Feb 2020; marinij.com, 28 Mar 2020; chicagotribune.com, 21 Jul 2012)
