He followed his older sister Meredith into the sport. He sailed in the Optimist and Laser classes before moving on to Finn. "The Finn was a natural progression for me due to my size. The summer before college I was too heavy for the Laser and that's when I knew I had to make the jump. The Finn has produced some amazing sailors and I have really enjoyed the challenge." "I was lucky enough to grow up by the ocean and I love being outside. I'm really at peace on and in the water, and there are some sailing conditions, when there are massive waves and it's really windy, that I feel like a kid. I'm working, getting better, faster, more fit, and I feel like I just played at a playground for hours." (teamusa.org, 17 Aug 2020)
