General Interest

General
SHARK ENCOUNTER
During a training camp in Japan in 2019 his Nacra-17 boat crashed into a shark, leaving the boat with minor damage. "That is a part of sailing, but to be quite honest, we have not yet experienced it that often. Of course we know that on many of the waters on which we sail, there are whales and sharks, but it does not scare us and we have little contact with them. The shark did not really do us any harm, there was a bit of damage, but we escaped with our lives." (rtl.de, 26 Aug 2019)

NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE
In 2017 he suffered a cerebral haemorrhage during a training camp in Majorca, Spain, and needed a life-saving operation followed by a lengthy stay in hospital on the island. He and his crewmate Alica Stuhlemmer could not sail for several months during this time. "To go from being very fit, and in many ways consider myself immortal as a very young athlete, to being very close to never being able to do any of the things that you love as an athlete gives you a new look on not only sport, but on life. Every day I am grateful that I can still do sport and live a normal life." (welt.de, 22 Jun 2019)
