General
Fiji booked a spot at their second Olympic Games through their performance at the 2019 Oceania Championship on home soil in Suva. They lost to Australia in the final, but had already secured their place in Tokyo with a 36-0 victory over fellow Pacific Islanders Papua New Guinea in the tournament's final Olympic qualifying match.

In Rio in 2016 the Fijians reached the quarterfinal stage after pool phase wins over the US team and Colombia. Great Britain defeated them 26-7 in the last eight, and Fiji went on to place eighth after losses in the ranking play-off matches to the United States of America and Spain.

When the 2019/20 World Series was cut short as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fiji secured their second-highest World Series finish, ranking seventh. Their best performance during the 2019/20 edition came at what was ultimately the final leg of the series in Sydney, where they ranked fifth. The Fijians' best overall result in the World Series was their fourth-place finish in 2016/17.

Fiji finished 11th at the 2018 World Cup in San Francisco. They were eliminated by Spain in the round of 16, but went on to reach the semifinals of the tournament's Challenge Trophy, where they narrowly lost out 15-14 to Japan. Fiji's only other World Cup experience came in 2013, when they finished bottom of Pool C but won the tournament's Bowl competition.

The Fijian team have consistently been a contender at continental level in recent years, despite tough competition from Australia and New Zealand. They have finished in the top three at each of their nine Oceania championship appearances since 2008, including one title in 2015, when they beat Samoa in the final.
