General Interest

General
The People's Republic of China qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games by winning the 2019 Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament on home soil in Guangzhou. Tokyo will be their Olympic debut after they failed to qualify for Rio in 2016.

The Chinese team are yet to make a significant impression in world-level competition. Since the inauguration of the women's World Series they have not been an established core team, and have only played every leg of the series in the 2014/15 and 2018/19 seasons. They played one tournament as an invitational team during the curtailed 2019/20 Series, in Hamilton, New Zealand. They have made three appearances at the World Cup, most recently ranking 12th at the 2018 edition in San Francisco.

It is a different story for the People's Republic of China at continental level, with the team securing top two finishes at every edition of the Asian Games between 2010 and 2018, including gold in 2014. They also won the Asian championship title in 2014, and finished as runners-up behind Japan in five consecutive years from 2015 to 2019.
