General Interest

General
Having hosted the inaugural Olympic sevens tournament in 2016, Brazil secured their return to the Olympic stage by winning the 2019 South American Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Lima, Peru.

At the 2016 Games on home soil in Rio, they finished third in Pool C after losses to Great Britain and Canada - teams that both went on to contest the bronze medal match. They beat their other pool opponents Japan, but narrowly missed out on the quarterfinals as the lowest ranked of the three third-place teams. The Brazilians went on to beat Colombia and Japan in the ranking play-off matches to finish ninth on their Olympic debut.

They competed in the 2019/20 World Series as a core team, having achieved core status by winning the 2019 Hong Kong Sevens tournament. The 2019/20 Series was curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Brazil finishing 12th. Their highest overall World Series ranking is joint ninth, which they achieved in 2013/14 when both Brazil and Fiji ended the series locked on 18 points.

Brazil lost to Canada in the round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup in San Francisco, before they were defeated by Japan in the tournament's Challenge Trophy competition. They secured 13th place with a play-off win against South Africa.

The Brazilian team have been dominant at continental level, including winning the 2020 South American Championship in Montevideo, Uruguay. Brazil finished fourth at the 2019 Pan American Games, falling just short of retaining the bronze they claimed four years earlier.
