General Interest

General
Australia arrive in Tokyo as the reigning Olympic champions after claiming gold at the inaugural Olympic sevens tournament in Rio de Janeiro. They stood atop the podium following a 24-17 victory in the gold medal match against New Zealand, having previously overcome Spain 24-0 in the quarterfinals and Canada 17-5 at the semifinal stage. The only match they did not win in the tournament was a 12-12 draw with the United States of America in the pool phase.

The Australian team booked their return to the Olympic Games via the 2018/19 World Series. Their fourth-place finish was Australia's lowest since the first women's World Series in 2012/13, but it was enough to secure their spot in Tokyo as one of four teams to qualify from the series. In the 2019/20 edition they trailed leaders New Zealand by 16 points when the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring a second-place ranking. The Australians have claimed two overall World Series titles [2015/16 and 2017/18], and are the only team other than New Zealand to have won the series.

Australia claimed bronze at the 2018 World Cup in San Francisco, beating the US team in the third-place match following semifinal defeat to eventual runners-up France. In 2009 Australia became the first women's sevens side to win a World Cup title when they triumphed at the inaugural tournament in Dubai.

On home soil at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the Australian team were beaten by New Zealand 17-12 after extra-time in a tight gold medal match.
