He initially played football at school before his geography teacher encouraged him to try rowing. "In football, I was used to everyone muttering at each other all the time. The rowing world was much nicer, with all nice competitors." (volkskrant.nl, 25 Aug 2019; roeien.nl, Jul 2010)

General Interest

General
OLYMPIC PROMISE
Following the death of his rowing teammate Daan Bruhl in 2010, he vowed to honour him by winning a gold medal at the Olympic Games. "We both do well, complement each other and make plans together. And then all of a sudden it's gone. That was intense, emotional and very difficult. Someone immediately told me that I would regret that promise. I don't. It was just a very emotional moment." (volkskrant.nl, 25 Aug 2019)

IMPROVED MENTAL GAME
In 2018 he began working with a sports psychologist and decided to stop using social media in order to improve his mental approach to the sport. "[Dutch speed skater] Kjeld Nuis once said, 'If I skate my best race, others will have a hard time'. That way of thinking inspired me and coincidentally my girlfriend had been working with a mental coach for some time. Social media does everything to attract your attention, and I want to avoid anything that draws my attention away from what I want to achieve, namely Olympic gold." (volkskrant.nl, 25 Aug 2019)

OTHER STUDIES
He has also studied for a master's degree in engineering at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. (sc.tudelft.nl, 02 May 2015)
