:
He was introduced to the sport in 2006 during his first week at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, where he was studying medicine. Six months later he signed up for his first spring season at the Leiden student rowing club, Asopos de Vliet. "I landed in a determined rowing group with whom I started taking part in competitions. Two years later I was invited by the national association to row an international competition in a coxless four." (roeien.nl, 01 Sep 2013)
:
He likes rowing because it challenges him. "I can always improve, row better and harder. I like to train hard, but you also need to watch your technique. I sometimes daydream about performing at a high level and then it helps to know that improvements can be made." (roeien.nl, 01 Sep 2013)
:
"By default I train twice a day, and some days even three times when we do strength training. We usually do strength training two or three times a week. For the rest, we occasionally have ergo training, but we try to train in the boat as much as possible." (deleidseolympiers.nl, 05 Apr 2019)
