LONDON TO RIO TO TOKYO
He struggled with motivation following the 2012 Olympic Games in London, but being a reserve for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro rekindled his desire and set him on a path to the Olympic Games in 2020. "After London I had a very hard time. How do I organise my life as an athlete? As a top athlete I lead a unique life. I train 30 hours a week, have to recover, I have sponsorship obligations and we are involved in team building. Then I'm exhausted. It is busier than a 40-hour working week for an average Dutch person. I practise seven days a week. When my girlfriend asks if we're going to do something fun, I often have no energy whatsoever. But after Rio I started really looking forward to competing at the Olympics again. I knew what I wanted, so I was able to start the journey to Tokyo with a renewed sense of energy."
