General Interest

General
DIET
She is a vegetarian and often travels abroad with her own food. "It doesn't affect my performance. In some countries, you have little chance of finding tasty meals without meat, and you may end up eating potatoes for a week. So I make sure I have good food with me so that I don't need to stress about it." (parool.nl, 28 Oct 2019)

BREAK AND RETURN
She decided to take a break from rowing after winning gold at the 2017 World Championships in Sarasota, FL, United States of America. She started training again in the late part of 2018, and returned to international competition in May 2019. "I never wanted to quit completely. My intention was to let it go for a year and return with new energy. I just wanted to be able to do other things for a while. To have a weekend away, to be able to work a little more, and live a normal life for a time." (sportprijs-utrecht.nl, 05 Mar 2019; trouw.nl, 13 Mar 2019)

STUDYING ABROAD
In 2009/10 she studied and trained in the United States of America for a year, attending the University of Virginia. She was part of the university's rowing team, the Cavaliers, and won a National Collegiate Athletic Association [NCAA] title in 2010. "My experience in the US was very special, and helped me progress as an elite athlete." (dub.uu.nl, 03 Feb 2012; virginiasports.com, 30 Jul 2012; blikoproeien.nl, 04 May 2015)
