General Interest

General
RIO PHOTO FINISH
He and New Zealand's Mahe Drysdale finished in the same time in the single sculls event at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, with the official clock showing 6.41.34. A study of a photo of the finish resulted in Drysdale being declared the winner by one 5000ths of a second. "I thought that maybe it's for a reason that I didn't win the gold medal in Rio, because I think great things are coming, so I'm looking forward for Tokyo and maybe even further." (croatiaweek.com, 13 Aug 2016; telegraph.co.uk, 13 Aug 2016; Olympic YouTube channel, 15 Apr 2018)

WINTER SPORT AMBITIONS
He has considered competing at the Olympic Winter Games in cross-country skiing because the sport is part of his winter preparation. "Rowing is still satisfying for me, but the winter seasons are long. Sometimes it's warm, sometimes it's cold and you cannot paddle at all. During winter we often do cross-country skiing as a part of our preparations, and during one of the camps I got an idea to try to qualify for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. We will see." (hrt.hr, 15 Apr 2018)

EARLY DAYS
His family were forced to leave Vukovar, Croatia, when he was young after the outbreak of war in the former Yugoslavia. They fled to Austria, and returned after the conflict ended to settle in Zagreb. "I was toughened up by the refugee lifestyle. These things affect people. It seemed to me as if I was watching a movie. I never forget where I am from." (glas-slavonije.hr, 23 Sep 2015; index.hr, 01 Oct 2013; 24sata.hr, 06 Aug 2012)
