She took up rowing when she was in high school in Tuyen Quang province, Vietnam. She then went to Hanoi and was first assigned to train and compete in traditional boat racing before resuming training in rowing. "At first, it was a bit psychological, I didn't understand why I was sent to practise another discipline. But every time I thought about my family, I was determined to practise. Thanks to that, we won a bronze medal at the 2014 National Sports Festival." (webthethao.vn, 07 May 2021; hanoimoi.com.vn, 31 Jul 2019)
:
She was scouted and fell in love with rowing. She was persistent, although her parents were not supportive. "I was scouted when I was in 10th grade at Song Lo High School. They coordinated the selection and training in Hanoi. I had only thought about going to try it out, but at that time I couldn't imagine what I would end up practising."
