His grandfather was a board member of the Canberra Raiders rugby league [13-a-side] team in Australia. (nbnnews.com.au, 20 Apr 2020)
:
In July 2015 he was on a training bike ride with the Australian coxless four in Varese, Italy, in preparation for the world championships the following month in France. His teammate Alex Lloyd slipped off his pedal and crashed, causing Turrin and Alex Hill to also crash. Lloyd suffered a broken collarbone and was ruled out of the world championships, but Turrin escaped with bad grazing and an injured wrist, and went on to compete in France. He grew up in the country town of Dungog, NSW, Australia, where his parents owned an antique store. He began rowing in 2005 after starting boarding school at St. Joseph's College in Sydney, and joined the Sydney Rowing Club the following year. "I first started rowing at school, at St Joseph's College. What really keeps me in it is the environment at Sydney Rowing Club and all the mates that you get to hang out with day, in day out. I did alright at [rowing at] school, but gave it up for 12 months when I finished, but realised how much I missed it and went back." (worldrowing.com, 01 Oct 2018; dungogchronicle.com, 12 Mar 2016)

His late grandfather. "Just before he passed away, he was someone who said, 'I just want you to follow your heart, and keep going with this, what you have started'. So I guess he is one of my main motivations for doing this sport and continuing on." (abc.net.au, 05 Aug 2016)

"I used to have a superstition where I wore odd socks, but I got past that and don't have any superstitions anymore." (Rowing Australia Youtube page, 12 May 2016)

He was part of the Australian men's four team that were named 2018 Male Crew of the Year at the World Rowing Awards. His crewmates were Alexander Hill, Jack Hargreaves and Joshua Hicks. (olympics.com.au, 24 Nov 2018)

He received the Rowing NSW 2018 Oarsman of the Year award in Australia. (rowingnsw.asn.au, 26 Jun 2018)

NEWCASTLE HOME
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 he relocated from the national training centre in Canberra, ACT, Australia to Stockton, a suburb of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. "We couldn't organise any boats up here but I've been lucky enough to get all the other [indoor] equipment [to train on] up here." (nbnnews.com.au, 20 Apr 2020)

WORLD TITLE REDEEMS RIO DISAPPOINTMENT
In 2013 he was selected to join the Australian men's coxless four boat, known as the 'Oarsome Foursome' in Australia because various crews have won Olympic and world championship medals in the boat since 1990. He won three consecutive world championship medals in the four from 2013 to 2015, but none of them gold. The golden drought ended at the 2017 World Championships in Sarasota, FL, United States of America, where he was victorious alongside crewmates Josh Hicks, Alex Hill and Jack Hargreaves. It was the first world title for an Australian men's coxless four since 1991, and he said it helped ease the frustration of his sixth place finish in the men's coxless pairs at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. "It means heaps to me, I've been trying for a long time to try and win something so this feels really good. To get something back after last year's [2016] disappointing result in the men's pair in Rio, this feels really good." (theherald.com.au, 01 Oct 2017)
