She played volleyball and softball at university and her teams would also train with the rowing team. The rowing coach told her if her other sports did not work out she should try rowing. After graduation she was working in media production in Connecticut, United States of America, and was looking for something to do outside of work. She remembered what the university rowing coach had told her and thought she would give the sport a try. "I'd never been in a boat before, I needed lessons. I had to get permission because it ended at 08:30 and I was going to be late for work. From day one I absolutely loved it." (courant.com, 21 May 2016)
