He was inspired to try the sport after his older sister Petra was part of a Brown University crew that won a National Collegiate Athletic Association [NCAA] championship. "The main draw for me in rowing was the competitiveness, this is all of me against all of you. I wasn't the best at the start, but with a lot of coaching I started winning more and more, and that drove me to work harder." (time.com, 29 Jun 2016)

"Rowing is cyclical, it's just the nature of the sport. Do not let the lows drag you too low and don't fly too high when things are going well. In other words, keep a steady head no matter how frustrating or good things are going." (row2k.com, 21 Jul 2016)

NEW MINDSET
He admits that he entered the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with a false sense of confidence, and has worked to change his mindset ahead of the 2020 Games in Tokyo. "What I thought was fast, wasn't fast. The level of speed people bring to the Olympics, it's completely different from what you are used to, and in 2016 that really shocked me, just truly how fast everyone is at that level. So going into this year [the 2020 Games in Tokyo] there's no false confidence, there's, 'Okay, this is the speed we need to hit, this is how fast everyone will be', so I have a better grasp of what we need to accomplish to get a medal." (wpri.com, 02 Jul 2021)
