"Some of my friends were in a rowing club, and they persuaded me to try the sport. Although I struggled at first, I enjoyed it straight away. In the end I was the only one who stayed with the sport. At first I played handball and rowed, but aged 15 I realised that I had to give up one of the two. The group at the rowing club were cool and I enjoyed it more than handball, so I gave up handball." OLYMPIC POSTPONEMENT
He had planned to retire from rowing after the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in order to concentrate on his family and finish his engineering studies, but decided to continue rowing for another year after the Games were postponed. OTHER ACTIVITIES
He has served as an athlete spokesperson for the German Rowing Association [DRV] since 2013, which includes acting as a mediator between German rowers and the DRV. "If there are any issues among the rowers, I am their point of contact." He also served three years on the Athlete Committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency [WADA]. "I was nominated by the German Athletic Commission and then applied. I was selected and it was an honour for me to be a part of this.
