He took up rowing in 2004 at the Schweriner rowing club in Germany. In 2006 he was diagnosed with glandular fever which almost forced him to quit the sport, but he recovered and moved to a boarding school in Rostock, Germany, to continue the sport. In 2019 he said he was interested in trying Ironman competitions. "I want to compete in an Ironman triathlon. The idea of standing at the start line, knowing you will be working hard for the next eight to 10 hours, really appeals to me. I am keen to see how my body will respond.
