General
Azerbaijan are competing at their second Olympic Games in the group all-around event. Their only previous appearance was at the 2008 Games in Beijing, where they placed seventh in the final. The team qualified for Tokyo by finishing eighth at the 2019 World Championships, on home soil in Baku.

The Azerbaijani team have been unable to win a world championship medal in 11 attempts from 2005 to 2019. The closest they came to the podium in that period was a fourth-place finish in 2009. Before their 2019 result, they had finished seventh at two consecutive editions of the event [2017, 2018].

The 2020 European Championships saw Azerbaijan record their first podium at the continental titles. Their second-place finish behind Israel was a high point, but it came at an event that had some teams withdraw due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the 2021 edition of the continental titles, Azerbaijan slid back down the rankings to seventh.
