"There was a camp at school that wasn't really about sports, but we went to the swimming pool. There I was seen by a modern pentathlon coach, Leonid Dmitrijev. He asked me if I was a swimmer. I said that I was not, but after a while Dmitrijev invited me to try modern pentathlon, which I had never heard anything about before. Modern pentathlon is interesting, there are situations when you fall from first place to last and then climb from the middle to first. It is an unpredictable sport." (la.lv, 02 Jul 2021)

General
TRAINING ABROAD
He says that as it is difficult to find a training partner in Latvia, he likes to spend time training abroad. "I have been the only one at this level in Latvia, so I mostly train abroad with other athletes. We are like a big family in modern pentathlon, quite friendly. I often train in Germany and Poland, where the conditions are good. Unfortunately in Latvia, it is much more difficult to fully prepare." (la.lv, 02 Jul 2021)

RUNNING
He says running has been his weakest event and spent time during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 developing the discipline. "Until then, running was my stumbling block, but we found a specialist who immediately noticed the nuances in my technique that I had been getting wrong. With persistent work, we fixed them, the results started to improve and now [speaking in 2021] I feel much more competitive. I do best in fencing and swimming, but in modern pentathlon you can't win if some other events don't work out. It must be comprehensive." (la.lv, 02 Jul 2021)
