She was involved in swimming and athletics while in middle school and high school respectively. She did not pursue the sports at elite level and instead decided to become a police officer like her father. She received an offer to join the modern pentathlon team at Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department after she impressed coach Shoji Kurousu when she completed a 1500m run in a quick time.
