He was inspired to become an Olympian after watching Hungarian swimmers Krisztina Egerszegi and Tamas Darnyi compete at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. "As a child, I wanted to be a great warrior, my idol was martial artist Bruce Lee. Since I was very thin, several masters advised me to learn to swim first, to get stronger. I found swimming captivating and this mutual love has remained ever since. In my free time I took up the other events, and eventually started pentathlons.
