He first began swimming in Aix-en-Provence, France. "I had a regional level but I was not amongst the best. And I often won the cross-country race at school, without doing any athletics. But I was above all very hyperactive. My mother used to ride and one day she saw a TV report about a sports studies programme based on modern pentathlon in Font-Romeu [France]. I then went there to do some tests and to my surprise I was accepted. I discovered a sport that I didn't know, I thought I would shoot a rifle! I ended up falling in love with the sport." NEAR MISSES
He finished fourth at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, just half a second off the bronze medal after a come-from-behind performance in the combined event, in which he started from 14th position. "Finishing in fourth place at the Games, at just half a second off the medal, makes you mad. I was in a very good shape, I had established personal marks in swimming and running. So it was very frustrating. Afterwards it looks like a good souvenir. I am not someone who stays in the past, I always look towards the future. I had a disappointment but I know that I have everything that is needed to go for the gold medal." Two years later he celebrated prematurely during the final stretch of the individual event at the 2018 World Championships in Mexico City, Mexico, only to be pipped by British rival James Cooke, losing the world title by a margin of 0.03s.
