She competed in swimming at student level in Cuba, but later left the sport after not receiving the call to the national team. She opted to try triathlon, but did not like the cycling aspect, so she decided to try modern pentathlon for the challenge. "I never liked the bicycle, I didn't know how to turn. I opted for pentathlon because I was already a swimmer and was doing fine in shooting. I had only to improve my running, fencing and a little bit of horse riding.
