He initially began kickboxing at age five, before switching to karate at age 10 at the APD Shirai Club in San Valentino Torio, Italy. "The first time I entered a dojo I was only three, watching my brother's karate lessons. I started kickboxing at age five but felt that my passion was not completely satisfied. When I was 10 I decided to change gym, and went to the Shirai Club where I met master Antonio Califano." (oasport.it, 13 Nov 2018; il-cosmo.com, 07 Mar 2019)
:
He followed his older brother Michele into the sport. "My brother spoke to me about karate with enthusiasm so I started, attracted by the opportunity to learn so many new things while having fun, and to make friends, some of which later became very important for me in the course of time." "This sport is simply a part of me. Although it may seem strange, something that attracts me so much is its complexity. Each combat has a duration of only three minutes, which can be decided with a single action that lasts just a few tenths of a second. Each bout is a competition first against yourself, and then against your opponent. I believe that in the word karate we can encompass all three of these adjectives - sport, discipline, art. Undoubtedly it is a sport, but at the same time a lifestyle that, especially in adolescence, stands out from the others. In addition, each athlete has their own style. Each of us in each fight expresses our art, our technical characteristics, our tactics. All united in our own way of fighting." (il-cosmo.com, 07 Mar 2019)

He received a medal for sporting merit from the Italian Olympic Committee [CONI] in 2019. (salernosera.it, 07 Dec 2019)

In 2018 he received an acknowledgement at the Gran Gala del Vesuvio awards in Naples, Italy, in recognition of his gold medal at the world championships that year. (napoli.fanpage.it, 21 May 2019)

OLYMPIC DREAM ON HOLD
Although his qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo appeared to be confirmed in March 2020, after the Games were postponed to 2021 the World Karate Federation [WKF] revised the qualifying process and reinstated the ranking events that had been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This meant he had to secure his qualification once more. "I have to take a step back and still have to fight for that dream that seemed to be already achieved [speaking in mid-2020]." He said that despite his frustration over the situation, the extra time to prepare for the Games would allow him to adapt to the -67kg weight category. He had previously competed in the -60kg class, which will not feature in Tokyo. "Having one more year available will be an advantage for me as at the Games I will fight in a different weight category, the -67kg and not the -60kg. Now I will have more time to gain experience in the new category." (raisport.rai.it, 29 Jun 2020; lacittadisalerno.it, 25 Jul 2020; wkf.net, 18 Mar 2020; insidethegames.biz, 20 May 2020)
