He was introduced to the sport at a gym where his parents worked. His father has been a karate instructor for around 40 years. "I actually had no choice but to do karate. Because my dad was a karate trainer, I can say I was born into the sport. My mother was also working at the gym and my father was taking classes, so I grew up in the karate gym." He says he has benefited from being coached by his father Adnan from an early age. "Having my father behind me is really an extra source of self-confidence. The man I can trust the most in life is my father. I am happy that we are walking this path together. We use up all our energy in training, and that's why we do not do much at home. We are a really well-known family in this neighbourhood [in Darica, Turkey]. They used to refer to me as 'Adnan Samdan's son', but now my dad is referred to as 'Eray Samdan's father'. We have had great successes together. In the future, if I become a coach like him, I will do my best to train new champions. The apprentice must surpass the master." (sozcu.com.tr, 21 Mar 2021)
