"Through my urge to move and a fascination with Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, I started in the nearby club with karate. After four years, at the age of nine, I changed club and coach to [train under] Uwe Schwehm. At the age of 11, I asked my coach to participate in a tournament. I'll never forget his words: 'Are you sure you want to do that?' He said at that time that he had never thought in my life that I would become a top athlete. But it quickly became clear that I had the talent and the will to be at the top of my game." (jonathan-horne.de, 01 Nov 2018)

"Karate is a philosophy. It's a lifestyle. I've done it since I was age five. It's my whole life. I like the mentality behind it. I like the story behind it. For me, karate is everything." (Facebook page, 25 Jan 2019)

General Interest

General
CHANGE OF APPROACH
In 2017 he said that because of his age he had changed his approach to competing to ensure he would be in shape for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "The Olympics is a huge dream. I'll be 31 years old [in 2020], which is a good age to compete at the Olympics and I hope to win gold. Like in boxing, I prepare now for the biggest competitions only and then I rest. I can't continue anymore like I used to, prior to 2016 when I took part in practically any tournament." (boutique-du-combat.com, 12 May 2017)

POST-CAREER PLANS
He wants to remain involved in karate after his competitive career is over. "I think I will always stay in karate. Maybe as a home coach or a national coach, I will see in a couple of years [speaking in 2019]. But my heart is karate so I will always stay in karate." (Facebook page, 25 Jan 2019)

HERITAGE
He was born in Germany to a German mother and a father from the United States of America who was stationed in the army in Kaiserslautern, Germany, at the time of his birth. (jonathan-horne.de, 01 Nov 2018)
