His older sister Tomoko and younger brother Shintaro have both represented Japan in karate. Tomoko won gold in kumite in the -53kg category at the world championships in both 2004 and 2006. Shintaro finished third in kumite in the -67kg category at the 2017 Premier League event in Salzburg, Austria. His parents both competed in the sport at national level in Japan.
