She tried a number of sports including swimming, jazz ballet and gymnastics before deciding on judo. Her mother Tessa said coaches noticed her talent and encouraged her to compete. "She was doing more and more important competitions and we were driving her to Belgium and Germany. But as long as she wanted it, that was fine with us," her mother said. (tym.nl, 29 May 2015)
