RETIREMENT PLAN
He intends to retire from competition after the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "It's official. My last fight will be in Tokyo. Just one more time I will put it all on the line. Mark my words I'll get my third Olympic medal." In 2019 he became co-owner of a gym in Velserbroek, Netherlands. "I am happy that I have found something that I can put my energy into. That gave me a lot of peace in the run-up to the Olympic Games. It's nice to have something to focus on, because the uncertainty about what to do after judo caused me some unrest. After my last fight at the Olympic Games I will focus on the gym. I would like to remain involved in sport after my judo career, so becoming a gym owner is a longtime wish that has come true."
