"My sister Liliana was in a judo academy in Machala [Ecuador], so she told me about judo for the first time and encouraged me to start training. My first training went smoothly since I was in good shape. I picked up the techniques quickly, as if I was born for judo. I made many friends and it felt great when I started travelling for competitions, but in the end, I just enjoyed judo." (Gabriela Torres YouTube Channel, 28 Mar 2016)

General
TRAINING IN JAPAN
In 2019 he spent time training at Tokai University in Tokyo, Japan, after receiving a training grant through the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Solidarity scheme. He has also studied Japanese. "I must give everything. If other doors open up for me, I will take advantage. I dream of an Olympic medal and this is the path I have to follow. I will be far from my family, but there are sacrifices that must be made to fulfil dreams." (deporte.gob.ec, 06 Aug 2020; El Comercio, 19 Jun 2019)

ENTREPRENEUR
He has launched his own sports clothing brand named 'LP' and has also developed an online store. He plans to open a judo school when he retires from competitive judo. "I think that we, as athletes, have to find some alternatives that allow us to have an income and to help. What I like the most is to start up a project and seize all the opportunities. Of course, not everything will go the right way but that does not mean we should quit." (deporte.gob.ec, 06 Aug 2020)

FAMILY
He is the youngest of ten siblings and dedicates his victories to one of his brothers, Miller, who died in 2007. (eluniverso.com, 11 Jul 2015, revistasoho.com.ec, 16 Oct 2015)
