He began the sport at age four at the Judo Sport Vitrolles club in France under coach Bernard Puget, and attained a black belt at age 15. He was recruited by the Institute of Sport, Expertise and Performance [INSEP] after he won a junior national title in 2009. He took up judo along with swimming and gymnastics, but quickly dropped the other two sports, preferring the teaching style of his judo coach.
