His father Hussain Shah won a bronze medal in boxing at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, which was Pakistan's first Olympic boxing medal and only second Olympic medal in an individual event. (thenational.ae, 18 Sep 2014; dawn.com, 28 Jul 2014)

His father represented Pakistan in boxing at the Olympic Games, but his mother did not want him to follow in his father's footsteps. As the family were living in Japan, he decided to take up judo instead. "My mother didn't want me to become a boxer after seeing my father being punched 500 times a day. That's why she didn't encourage me to opt for boxing. Judo is a national sport in Japan where we live, and it is all about self-defence.
